Alex Pittman joined the faculty of Barnard in 2015. His research and teaching connect the analysis of culture in a networked age with the historical study of sexuality and racial formation. His academic interests include critical theory, materialist feminism, critical race and ethnic studies, theories of sexuality, subjectivity, and embodiment, performance studies, and contemporary art and arts politics. Professor Pittman is working on a book, provisionally titled Under Pressure: Race, Performance, and the Intensification of Capital, that seeks to carve out alternative ways of analyzing links between social marginality, aesthetic production, and material life in the making of post-Civil Rights capitalism. His research has been supported by the Fisher Center of Hobart & William Smith College.

Professor Pittman is a member of the editorial collective of Social Text and the advisory board of Women & Performance: a journal of feminist theory.
